As I, Dr. Catrise Austin, grapple with the shocking human trafficking allegations against P. Diddy, a vital figure from my New York past, I'm compelled to use my platform to confront a critical issue intersecting with the field of dentistry.

Throughout my career, I've formed special bonds with many individuals, including Mama Combs, Diddy's mother. These recent allegations have fueled my commitment to educate and empower my dental community. On today's episode of Let's Talk Smiles, we tackle the signs and responses to human trafficking within the confines of our dental practices, shedding light on a dark subject that's often overlooked in our industry.

Human trafficking is not a distant problem; it's a pervasive crisis that could walk through our office doors. That's why this episode is a rallying cry for my fellow dental professionals and our patients to become vigilant advocates for those trapped in these dire circumstances. We discuss how to spot potential victims, the importance of creating a safe space in our clinics for disclosure, and ways to take action. The conversation also extends an invitation to you—our listeners—to join the crusade against this heinous crime, uplifting human dignity and freedom. Your role in this fight could be the lifeline someone desperately needs. So tune in, subscribe, and together, let's transform our dental chairs into beacons of hope.

Speaker 1:

Welcome to the let's Talk Smiles podcast, where we delve deep into the crucial topics shaping the dental industry and our communities. I'm your host, dr Patrice Austin, and today's episode is particularly important. We're going to be talking about human trafficking awareness in dentistry the dental professional's role, which is inspired by the recent Diddy trafficking allegations. In the wake of recent federal raids on Diddy's residences, the reality of human trafficking hits really close to home. But amidst these troubling headlines, it's crucial for us, as dental professionals, to understand our role in combating this pervasive issue. My journey to shedding light on the intersection of human trafficking in dentistry has been deeply, deeply personal. You see, I got to New York City in the 90s and I found myself hanging out at Diddy's restaurant called Justin's, where I developed really close ties with his family, particularly his mom we call her Mama Combs. The recent allegations against Diddy shook me to my core, igniting a passion within me to raise awareness about human trafficking and empower both dental professionals and patients to take action. So, as we kick this episode off, I want to help everyone understand human trafficking.

Speaker 1:

Human trafficking is a global crisis that affects millions of lives each year. Contrary to common misconceptions, it's not just limited to developing countries or certain demographics. Victims can come in all walks of life and trafficking can occur in any community, including ours, and you guys aren't going to believe these stats. According to the International Labor Organization, an estimated 25 million people worldwide are victims of human trafficking, generating $150 billion in illicit profits annually. Shockingly, 71% of victims are women and girls, with children comprising one in four victims. So what's the role of dental professionals? Well, I feel that dental professionals are uniquely positioned to identify potential victims of human trafficking. We interact with patients regularly, often in our private and confidential settings. So by recognizing the signs of trafficking and knowing how to respond appropriately, we can make a significant difference in our lives and of those that are affected. So next, I want to help you guys recognize the signs of human trafficking.

Speaker 1:

As dental professionals, it's essential to be vigilant and observant. Some common signs of human trafficking include patients who appear fearful, anxious or submissive, especially in the presence of a companion who controls their actions or speaks for them. Unexplained injuries, particularly in the areas of the body that are not easily visible during a routine dental exam. Inconsistencies in the patient's story or reluctance to provide any personal information. Signs of malnutrition. Poor oral hygiene or untreated medical conditions, tattoos or branding that may identify them as being owned by a trafficker.

Speaker 1:

I think it's really, really important that we create a safe environment. Dental offices should strive to create a safe environment. Dental offices should strive to create a safe and supportive environment where patients feel comfortable disclosing their experiences. This includes establishing trust through open communication and empathy, providing resources and information about human trafficking and making available support services, ensuring confidentiality and privacy for patients who may be at risk. So now it's time to jump right in and talk about how we all can take action.

Speaker 1:

Dental professionals, if you suspect that a patient is involved in human trafficking, it's essential to take appropriate steps to intervene as soon as possible. This may include documenting any observed signs or concerns, reporting suspicions to law enforcement or appropriate authorities, providing referrals to support services and organizations that really work to help these types of victims. Dental offices can collaborate with community organizations, law enforcement agencies and other healthcare providers to support victims of human trafficking. By working together, we can pool our resources and expertise to make a meaningful impact in our communities. Dental patients to all of our dental patients and colleagues, I urge you to join us in the fight against human trafficking. Together, we can raise awareness, provide support and advocate for the rights and, quite frankly, the dignity of all individuals who are affected by this really heinous crime, and I just want to share some closing thoughts with you guys as we conclude today's episode. I really want to thank you for joining me on this important journey. Remember, your voice matters and your actions can really help make a difference. Your voice matters and your actions can really help make a difference. Let's continue to shine a light on human trafficking and work towards a future where every individual is free from exploitation and abuse. To stay updated on future episodes and join the conversation, subscribe to the let's Talk Smiles podcast on your favorite podcast platform. Together, let's be the voice of change in our communities. Bye-bye guys.
